The Haiku is a beautiful and energy efficient fan from Big Ass Fans, a company who got its start cooling down large commercial and industrial spaces with....big fans. The Haiku comes in a a Bamboo and Composite material model.
From the Haiku Technology page:
"Designed by a team of engineers who recognized an opportunity to create ceiling art, Haiku’s contemporary ceiling fan technology hides inside the seamless fit and finish at its center. The sleek look conceals Sensorless Drive Technology™ that delivers an 80% improvement in energy efficiency over conventional ceiling fans. Before being confirmed as the most efficient among ENERGY STAR® ceiling fans, Haiku™ had already won the prestigious international LiveEDGE award acknowledging excellence in electronic design for the global environment."
And on a robust Haiku sustainability page:
"Haiku isn’t just an ENERGY STAR® fan—it’s the best ENERGY STAR fan. The typical residential ceiling fan requires 90 to 110 W of electrical input power. The average ENERGY STAR residential fan utilizes 65 W of electrical input power. In contrast, Haiku fans only use 2 to 30 W, exceeding the ENERGY STAR requirements for CFM/W by 450 to 750%. In a typical year, Haiku would use about 50 kWh.."
However, all this beautiful design and energy efficiency comes with a cost. The base bamboo model is listed (as of 2/9/13) at $995.00 and the base composite model at $825.
If you are lucky enough to purchase one of these fans it will come with mounting hardware, install guide, motor, airfoils, remote control and extension tube(s). You will need a Phillips head screwdriver, UL-listed junction box, wire stripper, and wrench to install it.
It is worth noting that the fan comes with a limited lifetime warranty, which may help justify some of the cost. In the user manual, the company defines the warranty : "The Warranty Period commences on the date the Product is purchased. The Warranty Period is for the lifetime of the motor. For other components and accessories, the Warranty Period is one year.
Labor to repair the defect will be provided free of charge at the Big Ass Fan Company service center for defects arising during the Warranty Period." So the lifetime warranty is only for the motor; which is still better than most.
